Human Rights Month

December is National Human Rights Month. This is something that holds great meaning for NorthRidge. The credit union philosophy is “People Helping People.” What better way to celebrate that, than by acknowledging and recognizing human rights? Everyone deserves to be treated with respect, dignity, and kindness without regard to gender, race, age, social status, or political and religious beliefs. We are all people; it is a plain and simple concept. And people help people.

We challenge you this month to educate yourself on a culture that is unfamiliar to you; perhaps one that has made you hesitant in the past. Research their triumphs and struggles, their customs, and their language, and come out with more understanding than before! Remember, people help people.

December 10th is Human Rights Day, the day the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) took place by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. The UDHR preserves the rights and freedoms of all human beings and marks when all humans, no matter any differences, were formally recognized as equals in rights and dignities. While December 10th is a great day of remembrance, there is still so much work that needs to be done to break through the challenges that prevent true equality for all humans. Stand up for someone’s rights today.

“Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home – so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. Yet they are the world of the individual person; the neighborhood he lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory, farm, or office where he works. Such are the places where every man, woman and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerned citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world.”

-Eleanor Roosevelt
