A credit union exists to serve a specific group of people, such as a group of employees or the members of a professional or religious group. This is called a “field of membership.” The field of membership may include where they live, where they work, or their membership in a social or economic group.
A credit union is a cooperative, not-for-profit financial institution organized to promote thrift and provide credit to members. It is member-owned and controlled through a board of directors elected by the membership. The board serves on a volunteer basis and may hire a management team to run the credit union. The board also establishes and revises policy, sets dividend and loan rates, and directs certain operations. The result: members are provided with a safe, convenient place to save and borrow at reasonable rates at an institution which exists to benefit them, not to make a profit.
The first credit union cooperatives started in Germany over a century ago. Today, credit unions are found everywhere in the world. The credit union movement started in this country in Manchester, New Hampshire. There, the St. Mary’s Cooperative Credit Association, a church-affiliated credit union, opened its doors in 1909. Today, one in every three Americans is a credit union member.
Most financial institutions are owned by stockholders, who own a part of the institution and intend on making money from their investment. A credit union doesn’t operate in that manner. Rather, each credit union member owns one “share” of the organization. The user of credit union services is also an owner, and is even entitled to vote on important issues, such as the election of member representatives to serve on the board of directors.
The primary purpose in furthering their goal of service is to encourage members to save money. Another purpose is to offer loans to members. In fact, credit unions have traditionally made loans to people of ordinary means. Credit unions can charge lower rates for loans (as well as pay higher dividends on savings) because they are nonprofit cooperatives. Rather than paying profits to stockholders, credit unions return earnings to members in the form of dividends or improved services.
Keep the following guidelines in mind when managing your accounts to avoid most NorthRidge fees.
Most financial institutions require a minimum balance on all accounts. At NorthRidge, we only ask that you maintain an average monthly account balance of $100 for single accounts (applies to members age 18 and older). A single service fee is $2.00 per month.
This also encourages account usage and will in turn allow you to avoid inactive and dormant account fees.
Conduct at least one transaction per year to keep your account/s out of inactive status. An inactive account has a fee of $5.00 per month.
An account that is inactive for 3 consecutive years is considered dormant. Dormant accounts have a fee of $15.00 per month
You can also simply give us a call to let us know you still wish to keep your accounts open and active!
Use Online/Mobile Banking or a check register to keep track of your account. Use overdraft protection from savings or apply for a line of credit. A day or two of interest on a line of credit are much less expensive than an overdraft or NSF fee. Be aware of pending debit card transaction holds and outstanding checks affecting your available balances.
Use NorthRidge ATMs located at our Hoyt Lakes, Biwabik, Ely, and Virginia locations. Also, with Kasasa accounts you may receive a $25 reimbursement on ATM fees. The fee for using a non-NorthRidge ATM is $1.00.
If you have a change of address, please let us know right away to avoid a fee of $5.00 for a bad address. Log in to your mobile or online banking to make the change, or call a member representative and we will update your address, 877-672-2848. We will attempt to contact you for up to a month to update the address before applying the fee if no contact is made via phone, email, or other. A bad address fee is then charged monthly thereafter if we cannot contact you.
